The People’s Court will be ending with its 26th season. With 39 overall seasons as of the 2022–23 television year, it is the longest-running traditional court show and the second-longest-running court show overall when you take all of its versions into account. Judge Milian expressed her thanks and shared her sentiments regarding the cancellation on her social media post.
Insiders claim that the decision was due to the declining state of the daytime syndication landscape. First-run syndication has gotten more challenging as local TV stations cut back on their syndication spending and the advertising marketplace shrinks. Also, in an effort to conserve money, station groups have also been increasing the amount of local news they broadcast.
From 1981 through 1993, Judge Joseph Wapner presided over The People’s Court on television. In 1997, the popular show returned with Judge Marilyn Milian as its host. Since then, the former Florida prosecutor has rendered verdicts in varying small-claims court cases and is the only Latina judge to have ever hosted a syndicated court show. Judge Milian hosted the show for 22 years, making her the show’s longest-reigning host.
Warner Bros. Unscripted Television, in association with Telepictures Productions, produce The People’s Court. Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution distributes. It is a Ralph Edwards/Stu Billett Production. The daytime reality courtroom series won four Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program in 2014, 2015, 2020, and 2021.
