Magic Johnson, fresh off his first NBA championship, confidently assures the interviewers in the locker room that the Lakers have what it takes to win another title. When asked if he has any advice for their opponents, he playfully replies with a warning to “better watch out.”
This exchange sets the tone for the new trailer of Season 2 of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” a seven-episode series premiering on HBO and Max on August 6. The upcoming season will focus on the period immediately following the 1980 NBA Finals through 1984, highlighting the intense rivalry between Magic (played by Quincy Isaiah) and Larry Bird (played by Sean Patrick Small) of the Boston Celtics.
In the trailer, Magic motivates his teammates, emphasizing that while they may have won the championship, they can’t rest on their laurels with just one ring. Meanwhile, coach Pat Riley (played by Adrien Brody) provides a reality check, reminding Magic of the challenges they’ll face as champions, as opponents will be eager to break them down.
The show’s attention to detail perfectly captures the 1980s Showtime era at the Fabulous Forum, showcasing iconic figures such as Jerry Buss (played by John C. Reilly) and Red Auerbach (played by Michael Chiklis), as well as the Laker Girls and other significant events from that time.
The talented Season 2 cast includes Jason Clarke, Gaby Hoffmann, Hadley Robinson, DeVaughn Nixon, Solomon Hughes, Tamera Tomakili, Brett Cullen, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Spencer Garrett, Molly Gordon, Joey Brooks, Delante Desouza, Jimel Atkins, Austin Aaron, McCabe Slye, Thomas Mann, Gillian Jacobs, and Rob Morgan.
The series executive producers are Max Borenstein, Jim Hecht, Adam McKay, Kevin Messick, Scott Stephens, Rodney Barnes, Salli Richardson-Whitfield (the director), and Jason Shuman. With its captivating portrayal of the era and the fierce rivalry between Magic and Bird, Season 2 promises to be an exciting and nostalgic journey into the history of the Lakers Dynasty.
