Prime Video cancelled the mystery series Three Pines after its first season. Its eight-part first season premiered on December 2, 2022, and concluded on December 23, 2022. Showrunner Emilia di Giorlamo, source material writer Louise Penny and star Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers were the ones to announce the news to the fans.
Tailfeathers took to Instagram to express her sentiments over the cancellation decision of the series. According to her:
“It has been difficult to process the news that there will be no second season of #ThreePines. Thank you to everyone who watched and supported the show. It meant the world to me knowing that this show resonated with such a massive global audience. As an Indigenous actor, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to be the leading woman on a #1 show like this. It was huge. Our stories matter and this show demonstrated that audiences, regardless of background, are hungry for Indigenous content.”
In a Facebook post, the author Louise Penny also wrote:
“We finally have word from Amazon Prime Video. There will be no second season of THREE PINES. Despite achieving #1 for Prime in US, Canada, UK, and other markets, and top ten wherever it was broadcast, Amazon has decided to cancel it. I am shocked and upset. Like any show, it had growing pains, but it was only going to get better and better. And it already had Alfred Molina as Gamache! Alfred was deeply invested in the show.”
Also, according to him, Molina wanted to pass along his statement to the ever-supportive fans.
“Sadly, we will not be returning with a second season. My personal disappointment aside, I am proud of what we achieved, and honored to have been part of a wonderful creative team who gave everything to bring Louise’s books to the screen.”
Three Pines follows Chief Inspector Gamache as he investigates murder mysteries hidden beneath the peaceful appearance of the Three Pines village in Quebec. It is based on the New York Times best-selling book series by Louise Penny. Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger, with Gamache’s life in danger as his team searched for him. Alongside Tailfeathers, the series also starred Alfred Molina, Rossif Sutherland, Sarah Booth, Pierre Simpson, Frédéric-Antoine Guimond, Julian Bailey, Anna Tierney, Tamara Brown, Tantoo Cardinal, Clare Coulter, Marie-France Lambert, Frank Schorpion, Marcel Jeannin, Georgina Lynn Lightning, Crystle Lightning, Isabel Deroy-Olson, and Anna Lambe.
Andy Harries, Sharon Hughff, John Phillips, Sam Donovan, Emilia di Girolamo, and Alfred Molina serve as executive producers for Three Pines. The directors are Sam Donovan, Tracey Deer, and Daniel Grou. Left Bank Pictures produce.
