Netflix has renewed its successful live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga, One Piece, for a second season. The announcement was conveyed through a special message from Oda himself on social media.
Oda expressed his gratitude to fans and the production team, stating, “I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios. It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it.” He then happily shared the news of Netflix’s decision to continue the show, adding that the adventures of Iรฑaki and the live-action Straw Hats will carry on.
However, Oda cautioned fans that it will take some time before Season 2 is ready due to scriptwriting delays caused by the WGA strike. Nonetheless, it’s noted that the series has a creative outline for the second season based on the source material.
One Piece executive producer Becky Clements emphasized that decisions about future seasons are made in collaboration with Netflix, manga publisher Shueisha, and Oda. They are committed to preserving essential elements of the manga that are beloved by fans.
This announcement coincides with One Piece’s continued success on Netflix, as it has maintained the top spot in Netflix’s Top 10 for two consecutive weeks and has garnered significant international attention. The series, which debuted on August 31, has already accumulated over 38 million views in less than two weeks, making it a significant achievement for Netflix. Social media buzz suggests that the first season could potentially become one of Netflix’s all-time most popular TV series.
One Piece, based on Oda’s manga, follows the extraordinary adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore mysterious islands and vast oceans in their quest to find the legendary treasure known as the “One Piece” and become the next Pirate King.
