Showtime has cancelled the epic drama series “King Shaka,” produced by Antoine Fuqua, which tells the story of the founder of the Zulu Empire. The cancellation is part of Showtime’s programming overhaul as the network merges with Paramount+. Despite this setback, Showtime remains committed to producing high-quality, diverse programming and has several upcoming drama projects in the works, including “Panda” by Eddie Huang, “Quiet in Her Bones” by Aminta Goyel, and a project by Justin Hillian.
Although “King Shaka” will not air on Showtime, CBS Studios is searching for alternative options for the series, which has completed most of its filming in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. Showtime is helping CBS Studios to find a new home for the series, which stars Charles Babalola in the lead role.
Showtime’s programming strategy will focus on three main lanes: complex characters and subversive antiheroes, high-stakes powerful worlds, and culturally diverse takes. The cancellation of “King Shaka” follows a reevaluation of Showtime’s slate by the new regime, leading to a shift in programming strategy.
“King Shaka” had a budget of $90 million and featured a large cast and elaborate battle scenes. Despite the cancellation, CBS Studios is exploring other options for the series, and it is expected to find a new home. Showtime will continue to produce high-quality programming and remain a leader in the television industry.
