Sally Ember, Ed.D. says
I can’t believe this was renewed. My 90-YO mom has been a lifetime fan of DOOL and she couldn’t even get through 1 Episode, it was that awful. I watched it all, like watching a train wreck, and for the laughs: the acting, the plots, the contrivances, the hamming and posturing were all too terrible to describe.
Perhaps, as she had, others tuned in to check on the state of each well-known actor’s latest enhancements (toupees, hair plugs, plastic surgery of all kinds, hair dyes, etc.), but NO ONE could have watched this slop for actual entertainment, unless they were too high or drunk to notice how trite and silly every scene was.
Worse, the writers and actors trotted out “the gays” (Chandler Massey, Zach Tinker, and the worst of the bunch, Greg Rikaart) in the most stereotyped manners possible. WHY, oh WHY?
Wasted completely were Thaao Penghlis, Eileen Davidson (both later additions who should have been spared the experience), Peter Porte, and Dierdre Hall: why were they even there, except for the excuse to hang out with old friends and collect money for doing almost nothing?
The worst of the bunch were definitely Abe’s (James Reynolds), stiffer than usual, and his fiance, Paulina Price’s (Jackée Harry) pieces. Harry, especially, seemed unable to remember how to act, despite having been “the first and only African-American to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.” She preened, screamed, and gesticulated for the cheap seats in every scene, even though she was on a sound stage and there were microphones and cameras everywhere. As the newest addition to the “team,” perhaps she was trying to make an impression? She succeeded. Every time she came on, I had to lower the volume A LOT.
While I was mildly interested in seeing cast members I hadn’t seen in decades (I stopped watching in the 1990s and never watched regularly before that), I couldn’t believe how bad the writing and directing were.
Red flags: 2 writers are credited overall, but then an additional 4 OTHER writers and 3 different directors were listed, for only 5 Episodes.
I would caution Kristian Alfonso (Hope) and Peter Reckell (Bo) to reconsider their involvement (they are scheduled to join the upcoming Season 2 debacle), but I heard it’s already too late.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME with this. Really. I am warning you.
