ABC has decided not to renew the drama series “Big Sky,” created by David E. Kelley, for a fourth season. It remains uncertain if co-studio A+E Studios will seek another platform for the show, which features Katheryn Winnick and Kylie Bunbury in starring roles.
“Big Sky” gained attention when it premiered in November 2020 and was considered one of the strongest broadcast series during the pandemic-affected 2020-21 season. The series introduced a trend of casting well-known actors, such as Ryan Philippe, as key characters in the marketing campaign, only to have them shockingly killed off in the first episode.
However, ratings for “Big Sky” have notably declined since its successful debut season, making it one of the lowest-rated scripted series on ABC. With the show airing 13 episodes in its most recent season compared to 18 in each of the first two seasons, the economics of producing a fourth season of the drama became challenging. Additionally, rumors of on-set tensions and the need for a creative reboot further decreased the chances of its renewal.
Despite efforts to find a way towards a potential fourth season, including a creative reboot and increased involvement from David E. Kelley, the decision not to renew the show was made. The third season, titled “Deadly Trails,” followed private detective Cassie Dewell, undersheriff Jenny Hoyt, and newly appointed sheriff Beau Arlen as they dealt with a dangerous mystery during a backcountry trip.
“Big Sky” is a production of 20th Television in association with A+E Studios. The show is executive produced by Elwood Reid, along with creator David E. Kelley. Additional executive producers include C.J. Box, Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Paul McGuigan, Matthew Gross, and Ross Fineman.
ABC also announced the cancellations of two other series, “Alaska Daily” and “The Company You Keep,” while the fate of the drama series “Rookie: Feds” is yet to be determined, with its chances potentially improving following today’s news.
