HBO decided to cancel Avenue 5 after two seasons. Avenue 5‘s season 1 debuted in early 2020 and received a speedy renewal before Covid-19 postponed season two until October 2022. This may have contributed to HBO’s decision not to continue further. The show’s future looked even bleaker when the cast members were released from their contracts in May last year, and actress Laurie agreed to take the lead role in Tehran’s third season.
Avenue 5 follows the crew and passengers of Avenue 5, a space cruise ship, which becomes trapped after being thrown off course, losing its chief engineer and leaving Laurie, their underqualified captain, in charge of the sinking ship. The series stars Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Lenora Crichlow, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, and Suzy Nakamura.
Along with Will Smith and Kevin Loader, the creator Iannucci served as an executive producer. Co-executive producers include Sean Gray, Jon Brown, and Keith Akushie. Richard Daldry worked as a line producer, and Ian Martin and Rose Heiney served as the supervising producers. The television show was a joint effort between HBO and Sky UK.
