Sky has recently announced the cancellation of A Town Called Malice, their Spanish crime drama series, after just one season, despite planning for a second season already being underway.
The show, which is set during the 1980s Costa del Sol crime wave, was written by Nick Love, the co-creator of Bulletproof and director of The Football Factory.
The story revolves around the Lord family, a group of petty thieves from South London, with Jason Flemyng starring as the family’s head, Albert Lord. While the show was backed by Sky’s full marketing support and was a significant part of their 2023 original slate, the show did not perform as well as anticipated, and insiders are blaming the competitive scripted content environment for the poor ratings.
Despite planning to film the second season in spring, the decision was made to cancel the show. Sky thanked the cast and the team at Vertigo Films for their creative work on the series. While Jeremy Clarkson praised the show on Twitter, industry critics were less impressed, describing it as “naff.”
