Fox has decided not to renew its highest-rated scripted series, 9-1-1, produced by 20th Television, as a result of changing business realities.
However, ABC has picked up the first responder drama for next season, making for one of the highest-profile series moves ever.
The transition should be relatively smooth as ABC has already been focusing on drama procedurals and has a series on the air that previously had a long run on Fox, American Idol. Fox decided not to renew 9-1-1 as it is their most expensive series, and after six seasons, the ratings for most shows on linear television have slipped.
Fox has no ownership in 9-1-1 and has been investing in scripted series that it owns or co-owns.
Meanwhile, 9-1-1 is a top-performing drama series on Disney-controlled Hulu, and its lead cast has at least one more year on their contracts, eliminating the need for separate talent negotiations.
