Willow will not be returning for another season on Disney+. The announcement came two months after the first season’s last episode aired on January 11. Season one premiered on November 30, 2022, with eight episodes.
Although it didn’t have the same zeitgeist cultural impact as the first film, Willow was well-received and got an 83% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Regardless of the cancellation, Willow is a significant IP in the Lucasfilm library and thus may be revisited in the future.
The live-action series is a sequel to the 1988 fantasy film directed by Ron Howard of the same name. Willow, set in a magical realm populated by brownies, sorcerers, trolls, and other mystical creatures, follows an unusual group of heroes embarking on a perilous journey to locations far from their homes to save the world. It stars Warwick Davis, Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel, and Tony Revolori.
Jonathan Kasdan is a co-showrunner alongside Wendy Mericle, Howard, and writer Bob Dolman. Kasdan also wrote the pilot. Executive producers included Michelle Rejwan and Kathleen Kennedy. The original movie’s director, Ron Howard, served as executive producer through Imagine Entertainment. Together with Michelle Rejwan, Kathleen Kennedy from Lucasfilm also served as an executive producer. The original movie’s writer, Bob Dolman, was the consulting producer. Lucasfilm and Imagine produced Willow.
