Halfway through its first season, HBO Max decided to pull off The Nevers from the streaming platform. The first part of the series premiered in the Spring of 2021, and the second half was expected to air next year. According to sources with direct knowledge of the situation, it’s possible that the already completed batch of episodes — those completed under Philippa Goslett, the new showrunner who took over when Joss Whedon left before the show had debuted — will air on another platform.
The list goes on for the cancelled scripted and unscripted series on HBO Max. Along with The Nevers, they also pulled off the critically acclaimed Westworld three months after its fourth season premiered. Minx and Love Life are also some of the announced cancellations this week.
The series, with a Victorian London setting, follows a group of largely female characters known as the Touched as they unexpectedly develop anomalous talents. Among them are Amalia True, a secretive and quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair, a talented inventor.
It stars Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, and Ann Skelly. The executive producers for The Nevers are Joss Whedon, Jane Espenson, Douglas Petrie, Bernadette Caulfield, Ilene S. Landress, and Philippa Goslett.
