Murphy Brown Series Information:
In a landscape of fake news and online disinformation, we're in desperate need of a real-deal reporter who knows the difference between fact and fiction.
Enter Murphy Brown, which will make its long-awaited return to CBS for the 2018-2019 broadcast season with Candice Bergen in tow, ready to reprise the role that earned her five Emmy Awards and the distinction as one of TV Guide's Top 25 Greatest TV Characters of All Time.
In addition to Bergen returning to the series' titular role, original cast members Faith Ford (Murphy Brown, Hope And Faith), Joe Regalbuto (Murphy Brown, Curb Your Enthusiasm), and Grant Shaud (Murphy Brown, Younger) will also reprise their roles as Corky Sherwood, Frank Fontana and Miles Silverberg, respectively.
As we inch toward the series' 30th anniversary, the revivalโwhich has been given a 13-episode commitmentโwill offer fans a look at how Brown tackles the current state of cable news, clickbait, and a VERY different political and cultural climate.
Also back for a second go-around is original series creator Diane English (Murphy Brown, The Women), who will serve as Writer and Executive Producer of the multi-camera comedy. Bergen will also be an Executive Producer.
When the current-day revival of Murphy Brown returns, actor Jake McDorman (Lady Bird, Showtime's Shameless) will go head-to-head with star Candice Bergen (Brown) as her son, Avery, a millennial journalist who followed in his mother's headline-making footsteps.
However, the traits they have in commonโlike a competitive spirit and quick witโmight be the same things that cause friction between the two.
Also joining the cast is Nik Dodani (Angie Tribeca, Atypical), who plays Pat, the director of social for the news show that's tasked with bringing Murphy & Co. into the 21st century.
Finally, Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Tyne Daly (Judging Amy, Cagney & Lacey) will also join the fray as Phyllis, sister to beloved (and deceased) bar owner Phil, who appeared in the original series. Now a friend of Brown, Phyllis also runs her brother's bar, which is where the former FYI-ers used to toss back a few cold ones after a long day in the newsroom.
