The multi-talented individual, recognized as an actor, musician, and painter, has announced that his HBO show, “Painting with John,” will conclude after its third season. The series, which blends instructive painting lessons with intimate conversations, features Lurie sharing his philosophical musings while refining his watercolor skills. Lurie shared this information on social media, expressing a mix of sadness and astonishment at the show’s existence.
Debuting in January 2021, the second season premiered in February 2022, and the third season became available in June 2023. Lurie, a co-founder of the jazz ensemble Lounge Lizards, is recognized for his roles in movies like “Stranger Than Paradise” and “Down By Law,” as well as for his Grammy-nominated soundtrack for “Get Shorty.” He also gained prominence through the quirky series “Fishing with John,” which aired on IFC and Bravo during the early 90s.
Written, directed, and featuring music by Lurie, the show has executive producers Adam McKay and Todd Schulman. An HBO spokesperson praised Lurie’s unique artistic abilities, highlighting his storytelling prowess and capacity to lead viewers on captivating journeys. The spokeswoman expressed HBO’s satisfaction in collaborating with Lurie on three remarkable seasons of “Painting with John.”
