HBO announces that the series Los Espookys will end with its second season. According to reports, this is due to the second season’s underwhelming ratings. With this news, the cast will be moving on to new projects.
According to Nielsen data, every six episodes of the first season received an average of roughly 156,000 live viewers on its June 2019 premiere. A month later, the streaming platform announced its renewal for a second season. However, the COVID pandemic slowed production, making it take nearly three years before the Season 2 launch in September 2022. When Season 2 finally debuted, audience figures got reduced in half, suggesting that the protracted slump had negatively impacted the show’s ability to thrive.
Los Espookys follows a group of friends in Mexico City who transforms their passion for horror films into a business by creating frightful scenarios and convincing people that they are real. It stars Ana Fabrega, Julio Torres, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Bernardo Velasco, and Fred Armisen. Also, the cast includes José Pablo Minor, River L. Ramirez, Giannina Fruttero, Carmen Gloria Bresky, Eudora Peterson, Greta Titelman, Spike Einbinder, Sam Taggart, Kim Petras, Isabella Rosellini, and Yalitza Aparicio.
Armisen, Ana Fabrega, and Torres created the series and served as executive producers. Other EPs include Lorne Michaels, Andrew Singer of Broadway Video, and Alice Mathias. Nate Young was a co-executive producer, and Sharon Lopez and Andy Garland are the producers for Los Espookys. Torres and Fabrega wrote the series with Bernardo Britto and Mara Vargas Jackson. Broadway Video, Antigravico, and Chilean production company Fabula produce.
“We are thrilled we could deliver the unique and hilarious second season of Los Espookys to viewers finally, more than three years after the series premiere, due to pandemic delays,” HBO said in a statement. “We thank Julio, Ana, and Fred for this imaginative and delightfully bizarre world they created. We are not currently planning on a third season, but we would welcome the opportunity to work with this cast and crew in the future.”
Julio Torres, who co-created and starred in Los Espookys, was revealed to be creating the comedy series Little Films and the coming-of-age series Lucky as part of his first-look HBO deal earlier this year.
