HBO Max announces that they are not pushing through the revival series of Degrassi, a supposed new addition to the franchise. Last January, the show got a series order and is set to have ten hour-long episodes, which will premiere in 2023.
It would have been the sixth installment in the Canadian high school drama series. Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen, who served as the show’s executive producers and showrunners, and the franchise owner WildBrain were to produce it.
“What excites us maybe the most about reviving this beloved franchise is turning it into a truly serialized one-hour drama,” Azzopardi and Cohen stated at the time of the series order. “We’re honored to be given the opportunity to lead this evolution and bring this iconic series back into people’s homes.”
The Degrassi revival series is the most recent project shelved at HBO Max since the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery concluded in April. Additionally, HBO Max has reportedly taken down a list of other original TV series and films to avoid paying royalties to the creators.
Fans of the show have been anticipating the Degrassi of this generation. With the news, plenty of them took to their social media accounts to express their disappointment with the streaming platform over the cancellation.
